Most people view the kitchen as the hub of their home ...
Most people view the kitchen as the hub of their home. It’s where the family converges to socialise, eat and at times catch up over a drink. Modern kitchens have evolved to become multi-purpose rooms that often include a computer desk, a fireplace and even an entertainment area. Designing a kitchen would therefore entail more than picking materials and colours. Factors such as layout, space, practicality and maintenance all come into consideration. Other influencing aspects include the home’s style as well as preferences of the home’s inhabitants.

Significance
Nowadays, the design has become more important as people spend more time in meal preparation, entertaining friends as well as socialising with family members. The design needs to pay attention to individual style as well as other practical and safety aspects.
Comparing Modern and Traditional Kitchen Design
In the past, kitchens were built to last and suit the style of the property for a long time. Traditional kitchens date back to the Victorian era. They were also hand painted so that a fresh coat would be applied, rather than being replaced, to create a newer, fresher feel to the kitchen.
Most contemporary kitchens are designed with prevailing fashions in mind. They also feature an array of texture, style and colour to make them more welcoming, fun and practical. They usually reflect the rest of the house in appearance.
Designing a Kitchen to Maximize on Space and Functionality
Before sitting down to start planning on a new kitchen layout, it’s important to brainstorm some aspects of the kitchen that one truly loves and the areas to improve on as well.
One can sketch several ideas that they have in mind for the layout. Another option would be to look in home improvement magazines for great ideas. In most cases, the space will be distinct in functionality and shape. As such, certain aspects of several different designs may need to be integrated in order to create the best kitchen. The kitchen needs to be appealing yet functional for daily use. A good layout can help in accomplishing these things. Because it will be used differently than other rooms in the house.
It’s important to pay more attention to functionality in the design process. There are several things that most people look out for when designing kitchens.
Style
A kitchens style may be designed in a classic, casual, contemporary or formal way. This largely depends on personal style and preference. Because things like kitchen storage cabinets, appliances, kitchen handles make up the major components withing the kitchen space, one needs to decide on what the overall style will be before selecting. If there are concerns about combining practicality with looks, most designs aspire to combine conventional appearances with modern convenience. A kitchen that’s generously proportioned with classic materials and modern amenities tends to be both practical and stylish.
Layout
In the 1950’s the term work triangle was introduced. This refers to the connection between kitchen sinks, the fridge and the cooker. For a triangle to be efficient, the steps one needs to take when preparing meals needs to be reduced. People with small spaces generally consider a single wall kitchen or a galley one.
Also rising in popularity are minimalist kitchens, where major elements are tucked out of sight so that the area features similar sensibility to the living space it merges with. There are also deluxe kitchens which are expansive, comprising of several work zones.
Important Considerations
Size
In most cases, the picture of the dream kitchen one has in mind isn’t usually compatible with the space available in the house. As with other house projects, one needs to balance between personal preferences and practicality. If the kitchen is tiny, one can try and borrow some room from an adjoining area, or even a few inches from s the neighbouring room. If this isn’t possible, one can try opening up the space visually. This can be done enlarging a window or installing a skylight.
Shape
The shape can also present a major design headache. Studies indicate that in the most efficient kitchens, the three legs of the triangle should add up to about 123 feet but not exceed 23 feet. Most kitchens feature three main shapes: the G, U and L. The G shape features one appliance on each of the two walls, with a third one placed on a peninsula separation the work area from the adjoining space. In the U shape, the stove, sink and fridge are placed on different walls. This offers a compact triangle that allows one to prepare meals while covering a short distance. It works best when the sink is placed in the centre of the U and the fridge at the end with some worktops in between to avoid breaking up the working area. L shaped kitchens use two walls for the three points of the triangle. In most cases, the fridge is at one end of the longer leg of the L, the sink towards the middle of the same wall and the stove perpendicular, on the shorter length. Traffic doesn’t flow into the triangle, since the design only utilizes two walls. Generally kitchen sinks should take the central position if possible, because it’s used more often as compared to the stove and the fridge. If the sink is on the same wall as the stove with the central work area falling in the middle, there’ll be minimal water dripping on the floor when one goes from the sink to the cooker. The refrigerator should be ideally a single door model and placed such that it faces the work triangle when open, rather than out of it. The current layout of the plumbing, kitchen taps and electrical fixtures can constrain the design options, such that one will either need to overhaul their dream design or face high re-installation costs. Depending on the house, it may not be possible to move these installations far from their original locations, mainly due to the constrains of the original design. So if the dream kitchen includes something that would require major overhauls, it may not be possible to actualise unless one has a large budget.
Safety Considerations
The kitchen needs large windows that offer ventilation, outside visibility and natural light. The doors also need to be large enough to allow unrestrained access and quick evacuation in case of an emergency. There should also be plenty of space for turning and movement to avoid accidents.
